🌟 Editor's Note
This week we are looking at a dating scam that plays out in real life, not just online. A simple first date. A familiar setting. And a bill that no one expects.
The bar scam works because it relies on social pressure and embarrassment rather than deception on a screen. It is a reminder that safety in dating also means choosing the setting, the pace, and the boundaries.
This edition breaks down how it works and what to watch for so a casual meet-up does not turn into an expensive lesson.

🚩 Red Flag of the Week
The “Let’s meet at this bar” dating scam
One of the fastest-growing dating scams in India and globally is the bar or drink-bill scam. It usually begins on a dating app, where a match insists on meeting at a specific café, pub, or lounge. The location often sounds trendy, exclusive, or low-key.
Once there, the date orders drinks or food freely. The bill arrives, and it is far higher than expected. In some cases, the venue charges inflated prices. In others, the staff and the “date” are working together. The victim is pressured to pay.
According to NDTV, a Mumbai man recently lost ₹24,000 after meeting a woman from a dating app who guided him to a bar and left him with an excessive bill.

🌍 Global Watch: Dating and Bar Scams Around the World
🇺🇸 USA: Similar scams have been reported in New York and Las Vegas, where matches steer dates toward specific clubs or cocktail bars and disappear once the bill is settled.
🇬🇧 UK: In parts of Europe, this scam is referred to as the “hostess bar scam,” where accomplices pose as dates to encourage spending. Authorities have issued advisories warning users of dating apps to stay alert when choosing venues.
🇮🇳 India: Police across major cities report a rise in dating app scams involving bars, cafés, and lounges. Victims are often encouraged to meet at partner venues where prices are inflated, and staff refuse to negotiate.

❤️ Reader Story (Anonymous Submission)
“We matched on an app and chatted for a few days. She suggested meeting at a place she knew well. I assumed it was just convenience. Once there, she ordered drinks confidently and kept encouraging another round.
When the bill came, it was far higher than expected. She suddenly became quiet, then said she needed to take a call. She never came back. The staff insisted I pay. I felt embarrassed more than angry. I realized later that the date and the venue were likely connected.”
Lesson: If someone insists on a specific venue and rushes the date, pause and reassess.

Why the Bar Scam Works So Well on Dating Apps
Search trends show rising interest in phrases like “dating app fraud,” “first date scams,” “bar scam dating,” and “dating app money scam.”
Experts say this scam works because of:
• Social pressure to avoid conflict on a first date
• Embarrassment that stops victims from arguing or reporting
• Trust built quickly through apps
• The expectation that a first date should feel casual and spontaneous
Unlike traditional scams, this one relies on real-world interaction, which makes victims doubt their instincts.
Link Tracking
One way to stay transparent online is knowing exactly where your links go and how they perform. Tools that clearly track and label links help prevent confusion and misuse.
For creators and founders who share links responsibly, link-tracking tools like Dub help keep things clean and measurable.

🧠 Scam - Safe Tip of the Week
To stay safe on first dates:
• Choose the venue yourself
• Look up the menu and pricing beforehand
• Avoid pressure to order excessively
• Split the bill early if possible

A first date should be about conversation and comfort, not invoices and pressure. If the setting feels designed to extract money rather than connection, trust your instincts and walk away.
