Every Friday, Kay Reports uncovers global dating scams, emotional red flags, and digital deception — so you can date smarter, not harder.
He posts about respecting women. His last three exes would disagree.
The performative man says all the right things. That is exactly the problem.
VICE published a piece this week on a term that has been spreading fast across social media: the performative man.
The definition is simple. He is someone who performs a specific set of values in public. Emotionally intelligent Instagram posts. TikToks about empathy and accountability. The kind of man who says, in the first hour of a first date, that he has done a lot of inner work.
Behind closed doors, he is a completely different person.
The controversial take
Here is what makes the performative man more dangerous than a straightforwardly bad date.
He has learned the language of emotional intelligence without doing the actual work. He knows what a healthy person sounds like because he has studied it, not because he lives it. And that means every instinct you would normally use to evaluate whether someone is genuine, whether they are kind, whether they are safe, has been specifically targeted and neutralised before you even sit down.
The performative man is not a dating inconvenience. He is a form of deliberate deception. And it is the most socially sophisticated version of it, because the mask he wears is made entirely of things you were hoping to find.
Licensed psychotherapist Ariel Rosenbloom, who spoke to VICE for the original piece, describes it clearly: "Someone who intrinsically has these traits does not need to prove or push this onto others in an overt way." The person who genuinely has emotional maturity does not announce it. The person who announces it is usually compensating for its absence.
This is not a new phenomenon dressed up in new language. We covered the gap between public performance and private behaviour in our edition on micro-cheating, and we have written about how the inflation of the term red flag has made genuinely dangerous patterns harder to name. The performative man is what happens when someone studies that inflation and uses it deliberately.
The red flags
🚩 He tells you who he is before you have had the chance to find out.
Genuine emotional maturity does not need an introduction. If someone is consistently, explicitly telling you how empathetic, self-aware, or emotionally evolved they are, pay less attention to the words and more attention to whether the behaviour matches. The declaration is not the evidence. The behaviour over time is.
🚩 His exes are universally at fault.
A man who has done genuine inner work understands his own role in relationships that did not work. A performative man has a polished narrative in which he is always the emotionally mature one who was let down. Every ex was difficult. Every ending was her fault. This is not always conscious dishonesty. But it is always a signal about accountability.
🚩 Your nervous system notices something your brain has not named yet.
Rosenbloom puts this well: "You might notice feelings of confusion or a disconnect between what the person says and how your nervous system actually feels when you get close to them." Trust that feeling. The confusion itself is the data. When someone is genuinely consistent, you do not feel confused. You feel settled.
The Kay Reports rule
Watch what someone does in the moments they are not performing. How they speak about people who are not in the room. How they handle being wrong. How they treat someone who cannot do anything for them. That is the person you are actually dating. The Instagram version is not.
🤖 Tools worth knowing
🎙️ Fireflies.ai
Record your debrief after a date that left you feeling slightly unsettled but unable to say why. Talking it through and then reading the transcript back are two different cognitive processes. The confusion Rosenbloom describes often becomes visible in written form when it is hard to name verbally.
📋 Typeform
Build a simple post-date reflection form. Three questions. Did their behaviour match what they said about themselves? How did they respond when something did not go their way? Did anything feel slightly off that you pushed aside? Answered honestly over several dates, patterns become visible fast.
⚙️ Make
If someone has a significant public profile, build a quick automation to pull their social media, public posts, and any news mentions together before you get invested. The performative man's public persona and his private behaviour leave different trails. A few minutes of searching can surface the gap.
Some links are affiliate links. Kay Reports may earn a small commission if you use them at no cost to you.
If this felt familiar, forward it to someone who needs to read it. The performative man works because almost everyone has been fooled by him at least once. Naming the pattern is the first step to spotting it sooner.
Hit reply and tell us: have you dated someone whose public persona was completely different from who they were in private? We read every response.
